Well Week 4 has just begun and we are moving into our wonderful Unit of "My Story: How I Express Myself Through Art". The students from each grade level will explore different ways to document their life stories, emotions, relationships, and express who they are! To introduce this lesson, I painted myself to look like a self portrait! This definitely caught the students attention! Now that everyone is excited for self portraits, we've jumped into our new projects! So far the work looks excellent! In Kindergarten we created self portraits with a guided drawing activity. Then the students colored in their self portraits with crayon and created a torn paper background for their image! The results were pretty great! We also learned about wax resists, watercolor painting, and a funny dance about lines! (Here's a link to the song on YouTube, should you like to practice "line dancing" at home!) https://youtu.be/DQEVllmeWH4 Grade 1 and 2 have begun learning how to draw faces, forms, and tell stories with their work! They drew a rocket ship during a guided drawing activity and then created a scene for it on their own! The students all made fun and interesting drawings that told a story. Since our unit is all about telling a story through art, this was a fun activity to really get their creativity flowing! Grade 3 is learning to turn shapes into forms and add value and texture to create a more realistic looking picture. We have started by doing a guided activity turning shapes into forms that are arranged like a still life. The students did an excellent jobs and are ready to draw their "Special Item Still Lives". This is where they will bring in an item that holds some sort of sentimental value, for them. For example: a special teacup that they use everyday, or a small toy. The item should be small, have some texture, be 3D, and inanimate. Grades 4 and 5 are working on drawing from observation. Specifically, they are observing their natural surroundings and drawing land and cityscapes. Within these, the students are being encouraged to look closely and find all the different textures that occur in these settings. This week, we went outside and made crayon rubbings of different textures to get a better idea of what visual texture looks like. Below are some examples of the work they did outside. Grade 6 has been working diligently on exploring different kinds of self portraiture. They have done observational texture and landscape drawings using the wonderful views from our art room. They bravely created blind contour self portraits that turned out amazingly! Now they will begin to study the different self portraits of famous artists and continue to learn the proportions of the face. I look forward to meeting everyone at Open House this week! The 2016-2017 school year has begun! It's Day 2 of the first week of school, and things in the art room are getting fun & funky! This week is mostly about learning the routines and expectations for art class. So obviously, one of the expectations is that we MAKE ART! So we did a little drawing on our first days to ease ourselves into Art Class. We are talking about our summertime memories and learning fun facts about eachother. The students from Grade 4-Grade 6 are working on and activity called "All About My #selfie", where they are to draw a self portrait, and answer some questions/prompts about themselves. They answer either by drawing a picture or writing a brief response. Below is my example for the students. So far, the students have made some really fun, colorful, and expressive drawings! I'll be sure to post their finished results of the "All About My #selfie" assignment.
The students in Pre-K/Kindergarten - Grade 3 created drawings that represent what they did this Summer! Some of them wrote a sentence or 2 along with their drawing, to describe what is being illustrated. they did an excellent job and some of the drawings have been very interesting and unique!
