HAPPY NEW SCHOOL YEAR! I hope everyone had a fun-filled, restful summer holiday! I know I did!
But if I'm being honest, I missed all my Little Sharks and I'm so excited to finally have them back in the Art Room, making messes, memories, and mostly... ART! It's the beginning of another fantastic year at QISS, and our Little Sharks have already started making some AMAZING works of art! We've been showing what we already know in Pre-K and Kinder! We practiced classroom procedures, following instructions, and flexing our imagination muscles in Grades 1, 2, and 3! ANNNND... the Grade 4, 5, and 6 classes have been learning about the International Day of Peace, and started planning their Pinwheels for Peace (that will be on display at the International Day Festival on September 22nd). *hint hint: MARK YOUR CALENDARS... it's gonna be great!* Basically, we've been having a blast and getting back into our "Art Class Groove". Look in the Gallery for a few photos from our first week, and check out the Inquiry Newsletter tab to find out what we will be investigating during this fun-filled first quarter! Glad to be back with my Little Sharks!

POP ART!During this short month, we will be starting our inquiry into Pop Art and the work of artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Claes Oldenburg. Students are learning about the art from this movement by creating Onomatopoeia Pop Art Words (inspired by Roy Lichtenstein), creating their own Campbell's Soup Can Artwork (a la Andy Warhol), and creating their own version of Pop Art, inspired by various artworks. PKK- Finished creating their Keith Haring artworks, this month, and worked on some life sized Abstract Figures. G1, G2, and G3- Students created Keith Haring Mini Mural artwork and participated in some critiques and discussions about their artwork. Students ended this month by making Onomatopoeia artwork, inspired by Roy Lichetenstein. G4 and G5- Students created Keith Haring Mini Murals, Critiqued artwork and created creative stories to explain artworks and the narrative that they told. Students ended the month by creating artwork that was inspired by Andy Warhol's Soup Cans. Students first learned how to draw the Campbell's Soup Can, and then added details based on observation of various versions of the Campbell's Soup Cans. G6- Students worked on mural designs and learned about the process of artist proposals for public artworks. Students began sketching mural designs, after taking a tour of the school and learning about how to make a mural function in the space of a building. Students are also participating in small art projects that are inspired by Pop Art, in order to continue to grow their skills. AnnouncementDuring this quarter is when our Art Classes begin to utilize recycled items to make our artworks. We do this to study sustainability, and eco-friendly practices in art. Students are encouraged to bring the following items to the art room:
There is a box outside of the art room for donations. Please feel free to bring by or have your child bring by any recyclable items! Art Challenge! This month's art challenge is to create a mobile. This mobile should include bright colors, abstract shapes, and be made with recycled items. For inspiration, look at the mobiles made by Alexander Calder, and the installations by Dale Chihuly. Mobiles must be able to be hung up for display, and should be turned in by February 28th @3:30PM. This challenge is worth up to 5 points, but students work must be very high quality to receive all 5 points. Partial credit will be awarded for projects that show good effort.
where has the time gone?!January has come and gone so quickly! We have been so focused on all of our Art Movement work, studying the figure and the work of Keith Haring, that I almost missed this months blog! Never fear! Here's your art update! All students have been working on various project that are inspired by the work of American artist Keith Haring. Students created a variety of artworks ranging from individual work to collaborative work, mini murals, life size figures, graphics, and visual puns. In Grade 6, students are working on mural design and learning about the preparation that goes into creating art for a communal space. PreK, Kinder, and Grade 1 have been practicing their collaboration skills by working on a collaborative graffiti "mural". Students really had to work together and problem solve to make their murals stand out! Grade 2,3,4,and 5 created individual mini murals that show understanding of proportion, overlapping, and color composition. Students created their own original compositions using the Keith Haring style figures. Grade 4 and 5 have also been spending more time talking and writing about their artwork and analyzing famous artworks, as we head into our section on Pop Art. Students have shown a lot of vitality, courage, and intelligence during our discussions and in their critique writing. Make sure to check out the walls of lower school for all the new artwork students have made!
